The final months of President Obama’s first term are now upon us and it’s time to take note of all the bizarre conspiracy theories that have popped up over the years.
There’s of course the well-known “birther” theory, from Republican Congressmen Steve King (R-IA) and Louie Gohmert (R-TX). Those two, among others on the right, have yet to stop floating the idea that President Obama was not born in the United States.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop with birthers. Back in 2010, President Obama went on a 10-day diplomatic mission that began in India. If the cost of the Indian leg of the trip rings a bell, it’s because some conservatives were abuzz with non-factual rumor that it would cost American taxpayers $200 million per day. For a little context, the war in Afghanistan at the time cost about $190 million per day.
Fast forward to the president’s re-election campaign and Rush Limbaugh’s theory about Hurricane Isaac this past August. The storm prompted organizers of the Republican convention to cancel the first day of convention events and Limbaugh suggested that President Obama was in cahoots with the National Hurricane Center.
There was no shortage of concerns from the far right about what would happen if the president won re-election. Here’s a whopper though; all-out civil war! That one came from Tom Head, Republican Judge in Lubbock County, Texas. It takes a lot these days for a conservative to see the need for a tax increase, but Head’s prediction about post-election civil war had him thinking along those lines.
