On Thursday, author and former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson joined MSNBC national reporter Irin Carmon in a live web video interview. The topic: The backlash to women’s progress, and the work that has yet to be done.
This summer, MSNBC and the magazine Matter have been re-reading the feminist classic Backlash, by Susan Faludi, with an eye towards the 1991 book’s present day relevance. Jill Abramson was the executive editor of the New York Times from 2011 to 2014, the first woman to lead the paper. Previously, Abramson served as the paper’s managing editor beginning in 2003. Abramson is the author, among other books, Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry wrote shortly after Abramson’s departure from from the Times, “She is regarded as a woman interested in other women’s success. She regularly acknowledges her indebtedness to pioneering women who came before her…And she was specifically interested in helping other women traverse the path she cleared.” Harris-Perry added, “It’s brutal to imagine a parting as abrupt, public, and gendered as Abramson’s from the Times.”
