“We will someday launch a woman into the White House,” declares Hillary Clinton to roaring applause.
The year is 2008 and the former first lady, senator from New York, and soon-to-be-secretary of state was endorsing then presidential nominee Barack Obama, but the message still resonates just as strongly today—at least that’s what super PAC Ready for Hillary hopes.
The PAC released a bold, emotional new ad on Tuesday, painting the former secretary of state’s path to the White House as the final frontier of women’s rights. The ad pairs dramatic music building up to Clinton’s endorsement speech.
“As we gather here today in this historic, magnificent building, the 50th woman to leave this Earth is orbiting overhead. If we can blast 50 women into space, we will someday launch a woman into the White House,” Clinton said. “Although we weren’t able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it’s got about 18 million cracks in it.”
It then shows the Ready for Hillary Facebook page, animating the “Like” page from just a few thousand to 2 million likes. (The actual Facebook page has 1.1 million likes, in fact.)
Clinton has not announced whether or not she will run, but she’d received a number of high profile endorsements recently—Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York declared “run, Hillary, run”; before him, former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Missouri Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill had endorsed the PAC’s work.
“It’s a long way away as everybody says but I’ll tell you this, I’m here in New York now because Ready for Hillary, this super PAC that’s full of grassroots people,” Granholm said on Morning Joe. “There are over 500,000 people who have already pledged dto help. over 1.1 million people have alraedy signed up on the website. 25,000 donations!”
The PAC launched earlier this year; it is now guided by longtime Clinton aides, but they stress that Clinton is not involved and hasn’t said whether or not she approves of the support.
