Local lawmakers in Newtown, Connecticut, voted Wednesday to destroy the home of the gunman who killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.
The shooter, Adam Lanza, lived in the home with his mother, Nancy, whom he killed before embarking on the shooting rampage at the school and ultimately killing himself.
The land where the Lanza house currently stands will be turned into an open space, according to the Associated Press. The house, which is owned by town of Newtown, is expected to be destroyed sometime after the winter season, according to the AP.

Earlier this month, two families of the slain children sued both the local school board and the town, claiming that there were security lapses at Sandy Hook Elementary School at the time of the shooting.
“We are hopeful that the town of Newtown’s elected and hired representatives will work with these families, who have already suffered, and continue to suffer, unimaginable loss, to help resolve this matter in the most efficient and constructive way possible,” attorney Donald Papcsy, who is representing the families in the suit, wrote in a statement to msnbc. “As residents of the town, we all either have, or are going to have, students in our Sandy Hook schools, and we promote the idea of learning from the past and protecting our children in the future.”
