Gov. Rick Perry criticized Texas State Senator Wendy Davis on Thursday for filibustering a Senate vote on an abortion bill because of Davis’ own personal life.
“Even the woman who filibustered the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances,” Perry said at the National Right to Life Conference held in Dallas, Texas. “She was the daughter of a single woman. She was a teenage mother herself. She managed to eventually graduate from Harvard Law School and serve in the Texas Senate. It’s just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential, and that every life matters.”
Perry’s speech comes two days after the Texas Senate Democrats stopped a vote on a highly-restrictive abortion bill. On Wednesday, Perry announced he was calling a second special session to address the measure.
“This is a civil rights issue. This is a human rights issue,” Perry said at Thursday’s conference. “We will ban abortion after 20 weeks.”
Perry also accused Senate Democrats and “pro-abortion activists” of using “mob tactics” to stop the democratic process.
“The louder they scream, the more we know we are getting something done,” Perry concluded.
