This is the first day of the Nerdland Scholar Challenge. If you’re not already signed up, you can do so here. To get started, join the Nerdland Scholar Challenge group or join the conversation on twitter using #NerdlandChallenge.
Check out the message below from Melissa Harris-Perry, who is leading the challenge, introducing our first week.
Welcome to the Nerdland Scholar Challenge, what we’ve dubbed the Mother of All Politics! For the next four weeks, instead of just visiting Nerdland on the weekends, you can join me every day to investigate the intersection of motherhood and politics.
I’ll be walking you through relevant political history leading up to today, asking you to investigate the concepts we discuss in your own community, and encouraging you to initiate a larger dialogue both on- and offline.
This week, we’re going back to the 1800s to look at how women advocated for their right to vote by making particular claims about motherhood.
Look out for Day Two’s email in your inbox tomorrow. Today, take our initial assessment quiz. Don’t worry – it isn’t graded.

How did you do on the quiz? Let us know by posting a comment in the Nerdland Scholar Challenge group (if you haven’t yet joined the group, you can do so here). And get ready for week one with this timeline of the suffrage movement.
