Sir Elton John on Sunday said that designers Dolce and Gabbana should be ashamed of their recent comments that called children born from in vitro fertilization “synthetic,” and called for a boycott of the brand.
John wrote on Instagram: “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic.’ And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana.”
John, whose two children with husband David Furnish were conceived from IVF, was reacting to a controversial interview the Dolce & Gabbana founders recently gave in which they said that the only marriage they support is a “traditional one.”
“You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that’s how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog,” Domenico Dolce declared to Panorama magazine.
Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have since doubled down on their comments. On Sunday, Gabbana said in a statement: “It was never our intention to judge other people’s choices,” and acknowledged that other families are legitimate, according to The Associated Press.
The #BoycottDolceGabbana hashtag grew rapidly, with other high profile stars joining the ban.
