He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968 to 1972 and is the only combat veteran in the presidential race, so far.
Webb also served as assistant secretary of defense from 1984 to 1987.
That was Webb’s first and only elected position. He didn’t seek re-election.
Webb is a prolific author who has published 10 books, including “Born Fighting” about the history of the Scot-Irish culture, and “Fields of Fire,” a novel about the Vietnam War.
