Two teenagers were found shot Thursday afternoon at a Florida high school, according to NBC’s South Florida affiliate WTVJ.
The victims were airlifted from the school’s football field and transported to local hospitals, while 400 more were “locked down inside the school after the victims were found shot,” reports NBC 6’s Jamie Guirola.
Miami-Dade School Board Police are actively conducting a search at Carol City High School in Miami Gardens, Fla., where the victims were found. Police have not said whether the shooting occurred on the campus or nearby.
Shortly after 6 p.m. ET, the Miami-Dade school board canceled all night activities at Carol City High, Carol City Middle, and Barbara Hawkins Elementary. All three schools had a controlled dismissal of any students remaining on campus.
Earlier Thursday, a gunman opened fire at Florida State University‘s (FSU) library, shooting three people before he was killed by police. The suspect — identified as 31-year-old Myron May — as identified as a school alumnus and attorney who was “in a state of crisis,” according to local police.
In total, there have been 90 school shootings — including Thursday’s — since 26 individuals, including 20 first-graders, died in a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012, according to data compiled by Everytown for Gun Safety. Last month, an alleged gunman opened fire at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Washington and killed four classmates and himself.
