Today, August 14, marks the end of an era in San Francisco: Candlestick Park is closing. Tonight, Sir Paul McCartney will play the stadium’s final event, almost 48 years to the day of The Beatles’ final live concert ever.

1. Throwback Thursday! Opening day was April 12, 1960 and then-Vice President Richard Nixon threw out the park’s first pitch!
2. Willie Mays made history in 1970 when he made his 3,000th hit there.
3. Pope John Paul II’s visited Candlestick Park in 1987 and held mass there for more than 70,000 people.
4. The 1989 “World Series Quake”–a 6.9 magnitude rocking the park, postponing Game 3 of the series between the Giants and the Oakland A’s.
5. Candlestick Park’s name was crowdsourced, chosen by the sports editors of San Francisco’s four major newspapers from over 20,000 entries!
