Public opinion in support of same-sex marriage has reached a record high, according to a new poll.
Fifty-eight percent of registered American voters agree with marriage equality and believe same-sex marriage should be legal, according to the ABC News/Washington Post poll.
The statistic is a dramatic change from the 32% of registered voters who supported same-sex marriage in a similar 2004 survey.
In addition, almost two-thirds of voters believe the Constitution—not individual states—should decide if gay couples can wed, according to the poll. Both supporters and opponents of marriage equality said the Constitution should be the basis of determining who can marry.
On March 26 and 27, the Supreme Court will hear arguments on California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
In a video posted Monday by the Human Rights Campaign, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton endorsed gay marriage. In addition, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman last week reversed his anti-gay marriage position.
Last month, more than two dozen Republicans added their names to a brief urging the Supreme Court to declare that gay couples have a constitutional right to marry.
