On this day in history, anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was freed from prison after more than 27 years behind bars. For South Africans, this day marked renewed hope for a nation with a long history of racial inequality.
Twenty-five years later, Mandela’s activist grandson is certain about one thing: South Africa is not yet free.

“We have just started the first steps of being free. Freedom is not just casting off one’s chains,” Kweku Mandela said to msnbc. “Striving for the freedom of all human beings is an eternal struggle. We’ve made large strides on the road to freedom, but we still have a long way to go.”
