Sen. Bernie Sanders may have been onto something when he said during the first Democratic presidential debate that “the American people are sick and tired of hearing about [Hillary Clinton’s] damn emails.” That is, according to a new Monmouth University poll.
A majority — 59% — of the respondents said they were tired of hearing about this issue and just 32% said they want the media to continue covering it. The finding comes the day before front-runner Hillary Clinton will testify before the House Select Committee on Benghazi, where she will be asked about her emails, in addition to the 2012 attack on U.S. government facilities in Libya.
And just over half of Americans believe Clinton when she says she used the email server out of convenience, rather than because she was trying to hide something (just 33% cite the latter reason). And similar proportions believe the committee is more interested in attacking Clinton than gathering facts about the Benghazi attack.
But Clinton is hardly out of the woods in the poll with just 35% calling her honest versus 48% saying she has not been honest about the email server.
“Bernie Sanders was right. America has heard enough,” said Monmouth University Polling Institute director Patrick Murray.
