An armed security guard died early Friday evening after being shot in the head by a lone gunman at a U.S. Department of Justice building in lower Manhattan around 5 p.m. ET. The gunman, identified by police as 68-year-old Kevin Downing of Fort Lee, New Jersey, also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The security guard, identified as 53-year-old Idrissa Camara, was a private contractor.
Authorities say Downing shot Camara at close range shortly before shooting himself.
The 12-story building where the incident took place houses several federal offices, including an immigration court, environmental offices, post office and branch offices for veterans’ affairs, the Department of Justice and Department of Labor.
