- Trump ignited a firestorm over the weekend for his comments on McCain, declaring that McCain was “not a war hero, he’s a war hero because he was captured, I like people that weren’t captured,” before adding, “he’s a war hero because he was captured, OK, I believe — perhaps he’s a war hero.” John McCain fired back at Donald Trump this morning on msnbc’s “Morning Joe,” saying Trump “owes an apology to the families of those who have sacrificed in conflict and those who have undergone a prison experience in serving their country.”
- The U.S. and Cuba go further to formally re-establish ties. The two countries will be re-opening embassies in each other’s nations today, bringing an end to more than 50 years of cool-to-nonexistent diplomatic relations.
- The New York Times over the weekend obtained a deposition from a 2005 Bill Cosby case in which he described many shocking aspects of his behavior with women. In the sworn testimony, Cosby described at length and in detail how he tried to gain the trust of many young women to have sexual relationships with them, and how he paid off women to keep the relationships secret from his wife.
- Liberal activists gathered over the weekend in Phoenix, Arizona, for the annual Netroots Nation conference. Presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley attended and appeared in a town hall on Saturday, but both candidates were flustered by activists who interrupted the event. They asked how the candidates would address issues of racial inequality and the deaths of black men and women in police custody. Neither responded well to the situation.
- New details are emerging about the Chattanooga shooter, Mohammed Abudulazeez. Family members said he had a history of drug abuse and depression. He had also recently been arrested for a DUI in Chattanooga.
