Today’s edition of quick hits.
* Hurricane Milton: “Life-threatening storm surges are expected to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast this week with the arrival of Hurricane Milton, which was upgraded Monday afternoon to a Category 5 storm over the southern Gulf of Mexico. The storm first strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane by 7 a.m. and, by 9 a.m. ET, it had rapidly intensified into a Category 4, the National Hurricane Center said.”
* One year later: “Scores of people assembled in a park in Tel Aviv this evening to mark the anniversary of Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attacks on Israel, which killed some 1,200 and saw 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.”
* In Georgia: “The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday reinstated the state’s six-week abortion ban while it reviews an appeal from the state of a lower court ruling that had struck down the law. The decision goes into effect at 5 p.m. local time, meaning that most abortions will again be illegal in the state after six weeks of pregnancy after that time.”
* SCOTUS: “The Supreme Court on Monday turned away a Biden administration appeal in a dispute over emergency room abortion care in Texas, leaving in place a lower court victory for the Republican-led state. The decision, months after the court wrestled with a similar case from Idaho without reaching a conclusive decision, constitutes a setback for the Biden administration.”
* At the border: “The number of migrants crossing into the U.S. illegally at the southern border reached the lowest point of President Biden’s administration in September, three months into his crackdown on asylum claims, according to internal Department of Homeland Security statistics obtained by CBS News.”
* From the Tina Peters story: “A Colorado judge has been getting multiple threats after he sentenced an election-denying former county clerk to prison for orchestrating a security breach to further a conspiracy theory that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump.”
* Oh my: “Tensions rose during a bipartisan forum this week after an audience question about discrimination reportedly led an Idaho state senator to angrily tell a Native American candidate to ‘go back where you came from.’ Republican Sen. Dan Foreman left the event early after the outburst and later denied making any racist comments in a Facebook post.”
