Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* Madison Sheahan, the deputy director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, announced on Thursday morning that she’s resigning from ICE and running for Congress. The 28-year-old Republican is running in Ohio, hoping to take on Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in the fall.
* California Democrats’ redistricting effort took another step toward success this week when a federal appeals court upheld the redrawn map, designed to give Democrats five additional U.S. House seats.
* In Maine, Graham Platner announced this week that he’s taking a hiatus from his Democratic U.S. Senate campaign in order to travel to Europe with his wife to try IVF treatments in Norway.
* Democrats this week won two special elections in Virginia, filling a pair of General Assembly vacancies. Both districts heavily favored Democrats, so the results weren’t much of a surprise.
* On a related note, a Democratic candidate cruised to an easy victory in a special election for a Connecticut House seat this week, holding on to a seat the party already controlled.
* The news for Republicans was better in Alabama this week, where a GOP candidate won a state House special election, also holding on to a seat the party already controlled.
* And with 33 U.S. Senate races on tap for this year’s midterm cycle, Donald Trump has issued endorsements for 30 GOP candidates. The lone exceptions are three Republican incumbents — Bill Cassidy in Louisiana, Susan Collins in Maine and John Cornyn in Texas — and the president reportedly plans to remain neutral in these contests.
