Immigration in focus. “Kicking off a first day of edits to comprehensive immigration reform legislation, lawmakers on a key Senate panel grappled Thursday over efforts to secure the nation’s borders and prevent a new wave of illegal entrants,” NBC’s Carrie Dann reports. But members on the committee from the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” was successful “in opposing the most stringent border security amendments offered by opponents of the bill, ranging from a massive influx of boots on the ground at the nation’s southern border to delays to the program that would make undocumented immigrants eligible for a probationary legal status.“The Gang stuck together – as we’d been told they would – on anything that significantly impacted their legislation that they drafted with their friends,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.).
Listen to your mother. “As his administration moves ahead in implementing his health-care overhaul,” President Obama will speak this afternoon on how his health care plan will impact and help women, in an event pegged to Mother’s Day. plans to deliver a speech Friday afternoon about how the Affordable Care Act will benefit women and their families, the Washington Post reports. The speech “will feature women and families who already are experiencing the new health-care law.
Cleveland Hopes. This week’s miraculous rescue of three girls missing for a decade should give families of other missing persons hope, and encourage them to be diligent in pushing police to keep up the search, the Cleveland Police Commander says. “They were always calling us asking, “What are you doing? What are you doing?” Commander Keith Sulzer told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
