Louisiana just became the latest state to opt out of the Medicaid expansion offered under Obamacare.
On Tuesday, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal signed a bill into law requiring more reporting and increased transparency in two of the state’s Medicaid programs, but passed on the chance for additional coverage for citizens who currently lack health insurance.
While 20% of the state’s residents are uninsured, Jindal maintains that “Medicaid expansion is bad for Louisiana.” The Medicaid expansion would have cut that number in half by covering about 400,000 people in the state.
By rejecting these federal funds, many Louisiana residents–and millions of people in the nineteen other states who similarly said ‘no’ to Medicaid expansion–will have more limited health care options. That’s where clinics come into play.
Against that backdrop, msnbc is bringing health care to New Orleans on July 3rd. In a partnership with the National Association of Free Clinics, uninsured men and women can stop by the clinic to receive preventive primary medical care–for free.
This will be msnbc’s 8th free health clinic to date. So far, these clinics have helped more than 15,000 people.
